5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BLURAY PLAYER, 20 Sep 2009

Ordering and speed of delivery were A1 – as has been everything else purchsed from Amazon.
Anyone wanting an excellent Bluray player should look no further than this Philips model. The picture quality and sound are up there with the best and, a great added advantage, is this player`s ability to play just about any type of disc thrown at it, including VCD SVCD! Additionally it is very easy to hack enabling it to play any regions DVD – note it is not possible to hack the Bluray side at present, so only Region 2 Bluray discs are playable.
Anyone interested in hacking the DVD side proceed as follows………..
1. Make sure there is no disc in the tray when you switch on.
2. Press “home” key on remote control.
3. Enter number “1389310″.
4. Switch off. Wait a few seconds and then switch on…now region free.

Congratulations to Philips on producing such a great player at this price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Budget entry into Blu Ray !, 6 Nov 2009

After using a PS3 for Blu Ray duties up to now, I wanted to get a “stand alone” player for use in another room in the house. I’ve looked at all the options, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung et al, but decided upon this as a cheap way to acquire a second player. One big reason for buying this one was the fact that it can be made multi-region on DVD via the simple handset hack listed in one of the other reviews. Whilst other players can be “made” or purchased multi-region for DVD, this is definitely the easiest for owner hacking.

Initial impressions out of the box are good. The unit is quite small and reasonably solid, presented in an attractive matt black finish. Theres no HDMI cable included but these can now be purchased quite cheaply, so no big loss. Connections are adequate with HDMI and component supported at the higher end of the resolution spectrum. Digital audio can be sent via the HDMI cable or using the coaxial output found on the rear of the unit. USB port and internet connectivity are also included for updating the profile on the BDP3000 when newer versions come along.

In use, picture on Blu Ray and DVD will not dissapoint, and I can see no difference in quality between this and the PS3 which is regarded as a good Blu Ray player. Loading times (often a bug bear on Blu Ray players) seem to be not excessive, and certainly quicker than those on my Toshiba HD DVD player from last year. The Philips seems to be as quick in this regard as the PS3, which has been the benchmark up to now. Sound to TV is fine via the HDMI and the coaxial connection to an amplifier presents no problems either. Overall sound is produced accurately and clearly by the player.

As a package this is ideal for those entering into Blu Ray for the first time or like me wanting to add a second player to their collection. The added bonus of easy multi-region DVD and the affordability make this a recommended buy for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars simple and effective, 7 Oct 2009

If you’re not particularly fussed about needing USB stick for BD Live or not having built-in WiFi for it, then this player is incredible value for money.
It has simple, effective, straightforward user interface incl. the remote, image and sound quality that beats many other players in this category, very fast disc loading times.
After much reading and comparing, finally chose this player, because it just does extremely well everything I was looking for, at a price point that is really remarkable: DVD upscaling is brilliant, I tried it with image-wise demanding material (e.g. The Mission, Baraka on DVD, Jean Michel Jarre concert footage) and it doesn’t show any overblown enhancements, so quality is great without an artificial look.
BD playback is just amazing, tested it with Baraka.
Media playback is also seamless, with simple menus and handles many media and codecs. I can’t (yet) comment on BD Live at all, as it was really outside my sphere of interest when buying the BD player.
Music CD playback on a variety of materials (from acoustic jazz to electronic music) is surprisingly pleasing, and even MP3 playback is perfectly adequate.
